I am doing research on double-page spreads of animal/nature magazines to get ideas and learn how it should be done and how to have consistency throughout the magazine with the cover, TOC, and DPS.

Pet Industry News

The magazine cover does not have any coverlines that give insight into the magazine's articles but rather uses this space to promote a product.

Number of images: 3

Number of total pages for article: 2

Description of each image: A picture of a clowder of white cats with blue eyes, a flock of different colored parrots, and a picture of the author of the article holding a dog.

Headline: Responsible breeding

Section Title: Responsible breeding

Pull Quotes: "As responsible breeders we must put the good of the breed above all else." This quote shows how the author feels about the purpose of the article. "The thrill of the first babies squicking in the nest was unbelievable." This quote gives insight into an experience the author talks about and how excited he was about it.

Article Font Format: Sans Serif for the heading and serif for the article.

Stylistic Features: Light blue rectangle blocks on the edges of the pages where the quotes are included.

Number of Columns Per Page: 2

House Style: The magazine uses the same color scheme of white and light blue and uses the same fonts such as with the heading of the TOC and DPS.

Content: This double-page spread is about breeding animals and how the focus should be on what is good for the breed rather than on the money.

Zoo News

The magazine cover has a main cover line with 4 additional ones at the bottom that are categorized by topic in which I am analyzing the animal one.

Number of images: 6

Number of total pages for article: 3

Description of each image: A rotated image of a black and white caterpillar on a leaf. A picture of a black and orange spiky caterpillar. A close-up of a green and yellow caterpillar with spikes. A black, orange, and white caterpillar with spikes on a leaf. Another green and yellow caterpillar on a stem. A picture of 3 orange small spiky caterpillars.

Headline: Very Contended Caterpillars

Section Title: Very contended caterpillars

Article Font Format: Sans Serif

Stylistic Features: A green circle including an interesting fact. A big green stylized 'y' for the first word of the article. A textured rectangle on the right side of the 2nd page that gives additional information about an organization. An irregularly shaped green item that included information on the picture of the 3 caterpillars.

Number of Columns Per Page: 3

House Style: The text for the articles is all the same sans serif font and most of the headlines use the same font as well that is used in the masthead and coverlines.

Content: The article talks about the caretaking of the caterpillars in the zoo and the steps taken to ensure they grow to be beautiful butterflies.

BBC Wildlife

The magazine cover has multiple cover lines with the main one being about the double-page spread I am analyzing.

Number of images: 2

Number of total pages for article: 4

Description of each image: The 2 pictures are cohesive illustrations that show an ecosystem full of life.

Headline: Dreaming of a Wild Christmas

Section Title: Your ultimate wild December

Pull Quotes: "The gem anemone just looks like an alien invented by a movie producer" and "It was confirmed as a swamp orb mussel, a rarity found at a handful of sites in the UK" both give a sneak peek into what the story being told is about.

Article Font Format: Serif

Stylistic Features: Illustration that stretches along the four pages as well as a column of text in a green box that separates it from the rest of the article. The blue text in the word "wild" for the title as well as the "I" that starts the article.

Number of Columns Per Page: 3 of them have 3 columns per page while the first only has one due to the title.

House Style: The main colors used are white and light blue in the cover page and double-page spread.

Content: The article depicts the dream December the author wants to experience in detail as it captivates the wildlife and nature he wants to be surrounded by in the story.

Here are DPS ideas and layouts that I enjoy and want to take inspiration from.
